Metal Binder Jetting

Type: Binder JettingMaterials: Metals

Overview

MBJ parts are built within a build chamber. The part productivity depends upon the size of the object as it relates to the volume of the build chamber, the production time and finishing required.

Process Summary

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Printing

The metal powder is evenly spread across the build platform by a re-coater blade. The liquid binding agent is selectively jetted from inkjet print-heads such that the layer cross-section pattern is deposited onto the layer of metal powder. Once complete, the build platform is lowered by the layer height and the next powder layer is spread on top of the last. This continues until all of the layers are complete.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Support Removal

Manual Removal Not required during printing; parts are self-supported within the powder bed. Soluble Support Removal Non-applicable. Manual Cleaning Note: After printing, loose powder is removed via air blasting, vacuuming, or bead blasting before debinding and sintering.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Surface Finishing

Sanding / Polishing Applied after sintering to enhance surface finish and prepare for coatings or assembly. Chemical Smoothing / Coating Electropolishing, etching, or plating (e.g., nickel, chrome) may be applied depending on material and application. Painting / Priming Can be used for aesthetic or protective purposes, especially in consumer or automotive components. Gloss / Matte Control Native surface is matte and slightly porous; finish can be improved through post-processing or coatings.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Curing / Heat Treatment

UV / Thermal Curing Non-applicable during printing. Annealing / Stress Relief Essential post-processing steps include: Debinding Binder is thermally or chemically removed. Sintering Metal particles fuse into a solid, dense part.

  5. 5

    Step 5

    Assembly and Functional Finishing

Gluing or Bonding Rarely used; parts are typically machined, welded, or fastened mechanically. Drilling / Tapping / CNC Common post-sintering to add high-precision features or improve tolerances. Inserts / Fasteners Threaded inserts, helicoils, or machined threads are added post-process where needed.

  6. 6

    Step 6

    Special Treatments

Infiltration / Sealing Applied for improving part density or sealing porosity; e.g., bronze infiltration or resin sealing. Functional Coatings Coatings may include wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, or thermal protection layers.

  7. 7

    Step 7

    Productivity

MBJ parts are built within a build chamber. The part productivity depends upon the size of the object as it relates to the volume of the build chamber, the production time and finishing required. This information relates to the potential productivity of a single machine. All AM types can be arranged together to form print farms or smart factories that will increase productivity. These collections of multiple units can also provide opportunities for varying degrees of automation.
