Build Chamber

Technology Term

Definition

The Build Chamber is the enclosed space where the printing process takes place. This is slightly different depending upon the technology in question.

Within the powder bed fusion and binder jetting technology groups, this is the open topped box in which the build platform progressively lowers and within which the part(s) are formed.

Within the material extrusion technology group, the build chamber is an enclosure within which the extruder head builds up the part(s). This often offers temperature control which minimises the incidence of build failures due to thermal changes in the environment. It can also offer air filtration to eliminate potentially harmful fumes from the working environment.

Within the vat polymerisation technology group which use light curable materials, the build chamber is defined by a removable, predominantly orange or red, cover that blocks UV light from interfering with the controlled light curing process. These covers provide an important view of the building process for the user to check print progress.

Within the material jetting technology group which use light curable materials, the build chamber lies beneath a top loading door which prevents any light leaking in to the build platform.
