3D Print Resolution

Technology Term

Definition

3D Print Resolution refers to the smallest detailed features that any technology type can produce. This level of detail depends upon two factors.

Horizontal or XY resolution is the smallest horizontal artifact a 3D printer can controllably create.

Vertical resolution, or layer thickness or layer height, is the smallest thickness of a layer a printer can create. Typically smaller layers can lead to smoother finishes at the cost of increased time.

Some machines give control over vertical resolution, allowing production to be accelerated where the part's level of detail is not crucial.
