Project Story

Challenge
Google loaned RA Schools (Britain's oldest fine art located at the Royal Academy in London) a full Oculus Rift with Tiltbrush set up for their "Virtually Real" exhibition. Elliot Dodd's objective was to create something in the virtual world and then bring it into the physical world using 3D printing.
Approach
Using the Google's technology, he created this part human, part fantastical creature, which vistiors could view using the Oculus rift and then alter the scale of the object so that they could either pass inside it from below or tower over it.
Solution
The highly and complexly coloured object demanded a printing technology that could capture this without having to hand decorate it. As well as being laborious this would also go against the intention of directly shifting the object from the digital to physical. For this reason CJP was selected and the object was scaled to fit the maximum build chamber of a Projet 360.
Outcome
The data created in Tiltbrush needed a lot of manual fixing in order to produce a watertight CAD file to print from and then the colour data had to be wrapped around it. Because of the complex nature of the object and to facilitate the depowdering and fixing of the final object, it was cut into three parts, that enable the "tongue" to be printed separately with the top and bottom halves then closing around it. The outcome was an intriguing edition of 15, that represented the state of in digital creation and production at that moment in time.

Sustainability Rating

★★★

Uses naturally abundant, bio-based, or fully recycled materials that process efficiently with low energy, minimising environmental impact and long-term waste. This rating relates to the technology type only. The design, purpose and longevity of the entire object can offset any of the technology type's negative sustainability credentials.
