The Voxel Chair v1.0 was designed at UCL Bartlett by Manuel Jiménez García and Gilles Retsin, reimagining Verner Panton’s iconic cantilevered chair as a lightweight, cloud-like lattice. Using proprietary software, the designers programmed the chair's structural density at a voxel level, bypassing traditional solid-surface modeling.
To fabricate it, a robotic arm extruded a single, continuous 2.36-kilometer line of biodegradable PLA plastic that solidified instantly in mid-air. This pioneering project launched the design brand Nagami and is now part of the Centre Pompidou's permanent collection.
