Project Story

Challenge
To translate NASA's most detailed scan data of the surface of the moon, into a master 3D print with which to rotomould a polyurethane resin moon model.
Approach
This project is very much about surface and so both SLS (Industrial) and SLA (High Grade) were explored to establish which would provide the smoothest finish. In principle, the surface of an SLA print would be superior, however the physical supports would have meant the removal of multiple stumps causing scarring on an entire half of the sphere. Therefore SLS was selected. Using powder to support undercuts this meant zero scarring and the very fine stratification was bearable in return for preserving the surface detail.

Sustainability Rating

★☆☆

Can depend heavily on virgin fossil fuels, produce harmful emissions, and yield non-recyclable materials. Involves high energy consumption during material manufacturing. As an AM material, requires some re-processing after use. This rating relates to the technology type only. The design, purpose and longevity of the entire object can offset any of the technology type's negative sustainability credentials.
