Summary

The Alumina Systems gas distribution ring, developed with Plasway Technologies, is a 3D-printed ceramic "showerhead" used to evenly distribute gases over silicon wafers during computer chip manufacturing. This additively manufactured part has resulted in the tripling of chip production output, increased equipment uptime from one month to nine, and cut coating times by two-thirds compared to conventional metal ring designs.

Sustainability Rating

★☆☆

Can depend heavily on virgin fossil fuels, produce harmful emissions, and yield non-recyclable materials. Involves high energy consumption during material manufacturing. As an AM material, requires some re-processing after use. This rating relates to the technology type only. The design, purpose and longevity of the entire object can offset any of the technology type's negative sustainability credentials.
